Treatment Manuals

Please note that all manuals and protocols are uncopyrighted, so may be used as clinically appropriate. The protocols may not be sold, in part or in whole. My co-authors and I ask that we are cited as authors if these manuals are used as the basis for any other work.

All of these treatment manuals are intended for use by healthcare providers who can legally practice in their home juristiction. These are not self-help guides nor are they intended for non-clinical use. Please be responsible in your use of these materials.

Vowles and Sorrell (2007)
An eight session protocol for chronic pain intended for use in outpatient settings. Includes preface, therapist guide, patient manual, and references. Our first test of this manual was Vowles, Wetherell, and Sorrell (2009) Targeting acceptance, mindfulness, and values-based action in chronic pain: Findings of two preliminary trials of an outpatient group-based intervention. Cognitive and Behavioral Practice, 16, 49-58. That manual has since been used quite a bit across different clinics and trials. It exists in quite a few languages. It seems to provide a reasonable framework for treatment that works pretty well.

Vowles, Ashworth, Sowden, Beachill, & Stanyer (2021)
A manual is for interdisciplinary ACT that includes details for sessions led by non-psychologists/behavioural health providers. We have used this manual as the basis for our interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation programmes across four services for over a decade and several papers. The evidence is reasonably strong.
